Cyndi and John Fredricks are both natives of Buffalo, NY, and their careers kept them in that area, other than for a stint in Cleveland, OH.
When John came home with the news he had received an attractive job offer in Hutchinson, Cyndi was not initially excited. She had never been to Kansas, was familiar with all the stereotypes, and, besides, she was comfortable with her career and life in Buffalo.
Finally deciding it could be an interesting new adventure, Cyndi encouraged John to accept the new position. He is now vice president of sales for Gregory, Inc., located in Buhler. The progressive home-grown Reno County company produces sign making materials and related products for customers in all 50 states and 15 foreign countries. Cyndi is director of Faith in Action, a volunteer caregivers organization to assist the homebound elderly, affiliated with The Volunteer Center at Hutchinson Community College.
When first coming here to look for a house, Cyndi was impressed with the
variety and quality of neighborhoods -- and the people. "They give you a wave, or stop and talk with you. It's very welcoming." The Fredricks decided on a home in Hyde Park, a Hutchinson historical district. "Having a wonderful older house like this led us to a new experience -- antiquing," Cyndi enthuses, adding, "The antique district here is so charming!"
Among the other places in Reno County that have especially impressed them are the Kansas Cosmosphere & Space Center, Dillon Nature Center, and Reno County Museum. "And we just can't believe the zoo is free!"
Then, on their long list of impressive things, they got to Prairie Dunes. Nestled
into the rolling sand hills between Hutchinson and Buhler, the country club
has one of the top rated courses in the world, often compared to the legendary
links of Scotland. "Amazing," is
John's simple and emphatic description. He says the fact that the course has
been selected by the USGA to host such major events as the U.S. Women's Open
and the U.S. Senior Open is obvious proof of its stature. "This area really
makes the most of what we have here," John says. "I love that this
town is self-sustaining. It makes it more vibrant."
